Holobunnies 2

Sometimes, you want to play a game that challenges you. Sometimes, you want to play a game just because it's charming, because it's style and quirky vision just gets to you somehow. That's what HoloBunnies is, and if you want in on the ground floor - and you should - grab the quickly going kickstarter while you can!

HoloBunnies is what you get when you mix side-scrolling action, adorable, and a hint of metal. I was fortunately able to get a chance to see it right at PAX East, and can tell you it's a good set up of old style action, I was fortunate enough to talk with one of the developers of the game, Q-bit, the developing studio, is tiny, but that doesn't mean the game didn't have some very interesting goals. It's an action platformer at heart, but there are a few great elements. One is that there are different characters...bunnies, to play as. I can't help but really appreciate some of their artistic choices, the mixture of cute with difficult action.

They are certainly going for quirky, and it can't quite be expressed in still shots. The trailer they've created shows off the mood they are trying to set much more readily. In addition to the fun game-play, there was something that I wasn't really able to experience in the PAX East demo: you'll be able to travel between planets, choosing where you go and what to experience next, in your own order. One of the themes of the game is trying to find your own little place in the universe, and that's definitely something I can get behind.

Four bunnies are planned for the initial release, each with their own ranged weapon.

The development cycle still has a bit of time left on the clock, as they are planning for release in January of next year. It was a bit surprising to see, until I took into account how much content they plan on pushing into the game. Making a game feel open world and giving options takes time. Even though I only had a chance to see the one level, I still felt like it was enough for me to be convinced. I know one of the things that sold me was the music, which blends chip-tunes, electric guitar twangs, and yes, sometimes a little metal to make it completely unique. Part of the soundtrack is right on the Kickstarter website, so I urge you to go ahead and to listen it for yourself.

Well, what are you waiting for? There are only 10 hours left to the Kickstarter, and while I'm sure it'll be worth waiting for the full game, why not help it get off the ground now?
